above/below

2007 – current

above/below  is a photographic project that involves documenting manhole covers and the architecture or natural world (or the combination of) directly above. I am interested in the idea of the commonality of objects, overlooked and mostly ignored. A manhole cover transcends the idea of good/bad area, rich/poor neighborhood etc…they are the same everywhere. These objects are a connection between unconnected locations and communities. While traveling one can often find these objects are the same in countries that have a common colonial history, Senegal and France for example, or between trading partners.  While each above image is an indication of a location, location does not dictate the choice of manhole cover to be photographed. I chose the manhole cover, photograph it, and then simply flip the camera over and accept what is above. Photographs have been taken in Africa, Europe, Asia, North America, Central America and South America.
